Enjoying Oregon–One Day Trip at a Time…

Red Raspberry What a beautiful sight!  A red raspberry  just waiting to be picked !

Our recent Sunday Sauvie Island adventure proved to be very interesting in many ways.

It was a hot summer day in Oregon.  We came for Lavender Fest  but ended up with much more!

Kruger’s Farm Market  had a sign advertising U-Pick Red Raspberries which beckoned the girls and I in.  We started out to pick a few and ended up picking a whole flat of the red berries!  Then we enjoyed an delicious open air lunch of hot dogs, soda and chips which Kruger’s provides very reasonably.

Lavender and Willow

Lavender and Willow

Leaving the farm we headed down the road to Sauvie Island Lavender Farm.

While the girls cut us some fragrant lavender, I enjoyed picking out a unique willow branch to bring home !

Columbia River Walton Beach Sauvie Island

Wading in the beautiful Columbia River

Then, our adventure carried us to the other side of the Island where the girls enjoyed cooling off on Walton Beach by wadng in the Columbia  River.

Big Bird Nest

Eagle or Osprey Nest?

On our way, we were delighted to see what may have been an eagle or osprey nest built atop a telephone pole.

We left tired, but happy, that we had the opportunity to enjoy so many things in one summer day and we look forward to visiting The Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maize  there on Sauvie Island  in the fall.

Gales Creek Community Church

Gales Creek Community Church

Every year for 45 years, Gales Creek Community Church of God has held their Annual Strawberry Festival  on their church grounds located in Gales Creek, Oregon.   The historic original church building is a beautiful site and it has been standing, perhaps, since the early 1800′s.
In June each year church members and volunteers serve heaping bowls of  sugared or un-sugared, red, juicy strawberries over homemade shortcake topped with your choice of Cool Whip or Ice Cream.   This is all done for a moderate price and all monies are donated to activities that benefit community youth.

I had the pleasure of attending this Festival last Sunday, June 12th for the first time and was delighted not only with the abundance of strawberries, but also with the many arts and crafts vendors and live music that was available.  It was truly a wonderful experience and one that I surely hope to do again next year.

The words “Oregon” and “Adventure”  seem to go together for there is so much to see and do in this wonderful state we live in!

I was a born and raised Midwesterner who decided to retire and follow the Oregon Trail so I could live close to my daughter and family.  I drove across the country from Iowa to Oregon, stopping here and there along the way to explore.  However, the moment I entered Oregon in the fall of  2006 I fell in love with it and was so excited to call it my home !

As a grandma I am always looking for short, affordable day trips to take my grand-children on.  We have always loved taking adventures together and I have found living in Oregon to be one big, great adventure!

I hope you will join me as I take you on adventures with words and pictures that describe the many things to see in do in Oregon.
